From August 2024 to November 2024, I was a PLP Teacher supporting and teaching students at Invictus International School in areas like English, literacy and language, Maths, from Year 1 to Year 7. I’ve also developed materials, resources and assessment tools such as Informal assessments to assess oral reading fluency, spelling and comprehension of material read. As a PLP Teacher I’ve worked with students who have additional needs or who also require EAL support individually or in small groups. In addition, I have trained and mentored junior colleagues like fellow teachers and teaching assistants to be well prepared for their distinct roles.
Previously, I was a Middle School English Teacher at The Winstedt School. I’ve covered book study(eg; MAUS I, The Boy who Harnessed the Wind, Two Roads), poetry and units like narrative/ persuasive writing from the curriculum. With reference to MAP scores, I understand student’s needs better, differentiate and scaffold accordingly as the classes of Year 7, 8 or 9 are mixed ability. They do require learning and behavioural support. I also teach Humanities, International Mindedness and IMYC, and carry out Zones of Regulation with the class. Teaching students social skills and self regulation skills will help them get along with peers better and understand themselves too.
In the year 2024, I’ve been teaching electives like Fresh Start and Speak Up, daily for a period. Fresh Start is a reading support program that focuses on functional reading comprehension skills, parts of speech and reading fluency. Speak Up is a conversational and public speaking program focusing on interpersonal social conversations and preparing speeches with a structure to present in front of other students. To inform my intervention goals, I administer the MAP assessments and refer to results/ recommendations.
I’ve run Future Readiness programs like Animal Carers, Growing Goodness and Jewellery Design which leads students to explore and discover places, skills and possible future career prospects in this area by attending workshops. Having hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, learning basics of financial literacy, marketing and selling handmade jewellery after some discussion and research was a useful experience for students.
I seek to be able to fulfill this role by practicing sensitivity to be accommodating.
