I would use English as common ground in case explanations are needed, but I would start explaining in Italian. I can also teach Italian with a focus on science/technology vocabulary. I would give a lot of space to speaking, write down the sentences, summarize the important key concepts to focus on and explain the grammar from examples, providing exercises.
