I have experience as a volunteer English tutor during the pandemic. I assisted learners of all ages whilst home schooling with their prescribed English classwork as well as assignments. It was during this period and volunteering that I developed a passion for teaching English.
I realised no two student's are the same, one student may out of frustration have no desire to learn English however once they receive positive reinforcement and believe in themself and realise English is easier than they thought their attitude as well as grades improve dramatically. Another student may be particularly diligent and hard on themselves and get upset when they make mistakes and it is these students that thrive with extra assistance in developing their desire to learn. This extra assistance can be prescribing an appropriate book and or magazine to read and starting each lesson with some light hearted discussion about their comprehension of the book as an example. This then relaxes them before the lesson where they may be anxious to get top grades. Extra reading and supplementation for diligent students also filters into their classwork and assignments as over time the extra reading and comprehension benifits them in all areas of their English studies from spelling to grammar to comprehension and so forth.
Students that are frustrated and not interested in learning English can also be inspired in similar ways to more diligent students via prescribing an English song for them to listen to and playing it before the lesson to get them excited about learning English. In my experience as a volunteer tutor I have learnt that even the most stubborn student with difficulty in focusing can be taught English through understand them as an individual, what they enjoy as an example if the student is a football fan the lesson can start with discussing football in English which gets them excited and out of a negative mindframe.
All my lessons are based on the individual student and their needs, no two lessons are the same and I take a lot of care in understanding each student individually in order to assist them with their English education.
