I come into the classroom happy and full of energy. I engage all the students. I show interest in who they are and what they like. I ask about the food they eat in our pauses. I compliment them on their favorite clothes, or how well they play a game or a sport.
I repeat often, in various ways, so that the children have ample opportunities to learn vocabulary, pronunciation and especially not to give up.
Fear is the mind killer, so I try to make sure that the children do not fear me, and that they still respect me and what I am teaching them.
Singing in the target language is important, so I make sure we sing a lot, and that the children know the vocabulary and the meaning of the songs we sing. Currently I am teaching the children at School am Park in Harburg a song written by a man named Mr. Rodgers. The song is called It`s you I like". It`s a wonderful song for children to learn, one they can sing to themselves and their parents.
I have taught in several countries: in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan elementary schools, China and Germany.
