As an elementary teacher, I believe that it is essential to comprehend the fragility of the students at this age. I constantly remind myself of how my simple acts can echo for the rest of their life. Children in general are delicate souls primed to be shaped by their role models. I try my best to stay connected with my inner child by recalling my emotions at that age. This helps me in connecting with my students, therefore, accomplishing my objectives more smoothly. I believe in teaching as a mission with the objective of enriching the minds and skills of young learners. Education serves in directing students to reach the best version of their true selves. The main role of educators is to embrace the uniqueness of each student and guide them in applying what they learned in their own individual way.
Throughout my seven years in the education field, I have taught several classes with physically and mentally disabled students. I have also taught academically advanced students. My role is to implement inclusion in my classroom where all students can feel supported. I apply so by planning my lesson accordingly, containing differentiated material suitable for students on both ends. I also practice differentiated instruction to support different learning styles. In my perspective, differentiation also serves in managing the classroom and keeping students engaged. Students tend to feel unengaged and disconnected if provided with tasks unsuitable for their abilities.
However, my responsibility reaches far ahead of the learning institution, it is also my duty to support my students at home. No matter how much I practice acceptance and endorsement in my classroom, a student can never feel loved and supported if they are not feeling so at home. Students struggling at home often show indications, which is when it is my responsibility to contact their guardians and discuss their child’s issue. As known, the child is always a mirror of their home. Any progress made at school can easily be ruined if parents and teachers are not on the same page.
