Upon meeting new students, I evaluate the level of English proficiency to determine the best teaching approach.
- I interact with students and ask questions about themselves and general background. This is to help to gauge how comfortable learners are in expressing themselves in English, and start building a connection. Based on my findings during this lesson I determine the most beneficial method to employ in teaching the student.
- In the case of group lesson, I use the aforementioned technique to determine the different levels in the class and decide areas of focus in the upcoming teaching lessons. Which I letter evaluate for improved knowledge.

Lehrmethoden:
Typically I make use of the following teaching methodologies to teach my students:
1) Teacher-centered instruction method: Using this method I highlight my role as the instructor in the class, in order to help students understand that I am imparting knowledge onto them. When employing this method, I explain the concepts and assign individual work to the students (i.e students passively absorb the information while I actively deliver it). This methodology also helps me facilitate control over changes in student behaviour through direct instruction.
2) Student-centered approach: In this method students are included in the planning, implementation and assessment of the learning activities. Involving the learners in such decision-making, places more responsibility and ownership on them, hence engaging them more. Through students making sense of what they are learning by relating it to prior knowledge, and discussing it with others, the students' analytical thinking gets stimulated. I usually pair this teaching method with the Enquiry-based learning method.
3) Project-based learning method: I make use of this method to provide students with tasks to do at home with the aid of parents/family members (eg. building a family tree) and return to class to describe and explain their project to their peers. While for adult students, I also incorporate discussions of general topics of interest.
