Then ask things like : What movies do you like in English? Let's apply our knowledge to these movies. Any songs you like? Let's try to understand the lyrics through what we just learned (if it applies).

I think if you make a subject part of a student's life, then suddenly it becomes interesting to them to learn. The most important attributes are patience and empathy.
