I usually conduct a trial lesson with my student before we commence our main course. During this mini-lesson, I administer a placement test to assess their current level and understand their goals. After identifying the student’s goals, needs, and areas of interest, I endeavor to design and develop materials in the form of powerpoint slides, which typically cover all four skills in the classroom. However, this might be tailored to only two skills if the student wishes to focus exclusively on improving their speaking, for instance. In general, the slides include discussion questions, listening and reading comprehension exercises, as well as a topic-based vocabulary section so that students can utilize them in their conversations. At the end of each session, I provide the student with notes that include all new words and any mistakes they made. I then assign their homework for the next session. & before saying goodbye, I ask for feedback on the lesson to determine whether I should modify anything for our next meeting.
