Did you know that there are at least four different ways to use the -ing form of verbs in English?
1. Use The -ING Form Of Verbs In Continuous Tenses
2. Use The -ING Form When The Verb Is The Subject Of The Sentence

4. Use The -ING Form After some specific Verbs In English
You might already know one or two of these, but after today’s English lesson, you’ll have a more complete understanding of when we use verbs in the -ing form, like reading, watching, … and so on
Alright! Let’s learn about the -ing verbs.
continuous tenses are when an action is in progress, and we have continuous tenses in the present, past, and future.
Example:
Present continuous: talking about things that are in progress now:
Ø I am (I’m) studying English.
Ø She is (she’s) watching TV.
Ø We are (we’re) having lunch now.
Present perfect continuous: for actions that started in the past and continue and are still in progress now.
Ø I have (I’ve) been thinking a lot about this decision
Ø He has (he’s) been working here since 1995.
Ø They have (they’ve) been waiting for you for an hour.
Past continuous: for things that were in progress in the past:
Ø When I came home last night, you were already sleeping.
Ø I found 10$ on the street while I was jogging in the park.
Future continuous: for things that will be in progress in the future.
Ø Sorry, I can’t meet you tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be taking my friend to the airport.
Ø Skiing is my favorite winter sport.
Ø Eating vegetables is good for your health.
Ø Living in an English-speaking country helps you improve your English fast.
Ø I improved my English by practicing every day.
Ø We left the party after saying goodbye to everyone.
Ø I can’t believe he passed the test without studying at all!
Ø They’ve made a lot of money since launching their new product.
Ø I want to talk to you about investing in the stock market.
But don’t use the -ing form after proposition 2; Then we use the base form.
Ø I need to practice my English more.
Ø My mother told me to study for the test.
Ø We’d like to invest in this technology.
Ø The girl didn’t want to leave the party.

We use the -ing form of verbs in a couple of exceptions: After the expression “look forward to” and “committed to”
Ø I look forward to seeing you.
Ø Our company is committed to cutting costs.
Here are some common verbs in English that are followed by -ing:
(admit, avoid, consider, enjoy, finish, stand, don’t mind, keep, practice, spend time, stop, suggest, recommend, …)
Ø The politician admitted to stealing millions of dollars.
Ø You should avoid eating after 10 pm.
Ø Have you considered buying a laptop computer?
Ø I enjoy surfing and playing tennis.
Ø I finally finished cleaning the house at midnight.
Ø I can’t stand going to parties where I don’t know anyone.
Ø I don’t mind working overtime.
Ø My ex-boyfriend keeps calling me.
Ø I need to practice writing in English.
Ø My roommate spends hours watching TV.
Ø He stopped smoking ten years ago.
Ø I suggest taking some time off.
Ø The doctor recommended getting more rest.
How can you know if you’re supposed to use the -ing form after a certain verb? Unfortunately, there is no rule for this. You just need to learn each verb individually.
Finally, the verbs: Start, Like, and Love, can be followed by -ing or by 2-Form
Ø The baby started to cry = The baby started crying
Ø I like to run = I like running
Ø We love reading = we love to read
