Alright! Let’s learn about the -ing verbs.

1.    We use the -ing form of verbs in continuous tenses.

continuous tenses are when an action is in progress, and we have continuous tenses in the present, past, and future.

Example:

Present continuous: talking about things that are in progress now:

Ø  I am (I’m) studying English.

Ø  She is (she’s) watching TV.

Ø  We are (we’re) having lunch now.

Present perfect continuous: for actions that started in the past and continue and are still in progress now.

Ø  I have (I’ve) been thinking a lot about this decision

Ø  He has (he’s) been working here since 1995.

Ø  They have (they’ve) been waiting for you for an hour.

Past continuous: for things that were in progress in the past:

Ø  When I came home last night, you were already sleeping.

Ø  I found 10$ on the street while I was jogging in the park.

Future continuous: for things that will be in progress in the future.

Ø  Sorry, I can’t meet you tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be taking my friend to the airport.

2.    We use the -ing form of verbs when the verb in the subject of the sentence

Ø  Skiing is my favorite winter sport.

Ø  Eating vegetables is good for your health.

Ø  Living in an English-speaking country helps you improve your English fast.

3.    We use the -ing form of verbs after propositions (by, until, before, after, without, since, four, look forward to, committed to)

Ø  I improved my English by practicing every day.

Ø  We left the party after saying goodbye to everyone.

Ø  I can’t believe he passed the test without studying at all!

Ø  They’ve made a lot of money since launching their new product.

Ø  I want to talk to you about investing in the stock market.

But don’t use the -ing form after proposition 2; Then we use the base form.

Ø  I need to practice my English more.

Ø  My mother told me to study for the test.

Ø  We’d like to invest in this technology.

Ø  The girl didn’t want to leave the party.

 {{4:the -ing form of verbs: exceptions}}

We use the -ing form of verbs in a couple of exceptions: After the expression “look forward to” and “committed to”

Ø  I look forward to seeing you.

Ø  Our company is committed to cutting costs.

4.     We use the -ing form of verbs after some specific verbs in English

Here are some common verbs in English that are followed by -ing:

(admit, avoid, consider, enjoy, finish, stand, don’t mind, keep, practice, spend time, stop, suggest, recommend, …)

Ø  The politician admitted to stealing millions of dollars.

Ø  You should avoid eating after 10 pm.

Ø  Have you considered buying a laptop computer?

Ø  I enjoy surfing and playing tennis.

Ø  I finally finished cleaning the house at midnight.

How can you know if you’re supposed to use the -ing form after a certain verb? Unfortunately, there is no rule for this. You just need to learn each verb individually.

Finally, the verbs: Start, Like, and Love, can be followed by -ing or by 2-Form

Ø  The baby started to cry = The baby started crying

Ø  I like to run = I like running
